The marbles of Naxos are known from ancient Greece, since in terms of its natural wealth, due to the wide variety of useful minerals found in its subsoil, it provided from ancient times the valuable raw material to the local artisans and marble craftsmen for the creation

The Archaic period highlights Naxos as one of the most famous and prosperous centers of the Aegean. The kouroi of Naxos are the oldest found in Greece, while the Naxos marble that occurs mainly in the five mountains near the area of Kynidaros, a village 400 meters above sea level, and 15 kilometers east of the city of Naxos ), rivaled in quality all the known marbles of the time.

Typical examples are the Naxian Sphinx at Delphi (c. 570 BC), the House of the Naxians at Delos and two of the earliest daughters of the Acropolis (c. 550 BC) that are made of Naxian marble. Another Naxian tribute at Delos was 16 lions in array on Egyptian standards (c. 600 BC).

Today the Naxos marble mountains around the Kynidaros area are known as: Sanidas (the oldest quarry, still in operation), Zas (not to be confused with Mount Za), which houses three quarries, the Bolibas (the largest quarry, which is visible from the road to Kynidaros), Dyracha and the quarries of Amelathiou and Skarendzou (which are inactive today).
